Creative inspiration from nature.

Jim Partridge, woodworker

I began making wooden items in my shed on the edge of Dartmoor, crafting small pieces for friends and family. What started as a hobby grew into Grafton James Designs, where I now handcraft home decor, kitchenware, and gifts using sustainably sourced timbers. Each piece is designed and finished by me. No mass production, just careful attention to grain, joinery, and finish.

I enjoy working with the natural character of wood: knots, figure, and colour variations become part of the design rather than something to hide. My focus is on simple, functional forms that highlight the material, breadboards, serving utensils, candle holders, trays, and occasional furniture, all made to be used and appreciated every day. I finish pieces with food-safe oils and waxes where appropriate, so they’re safe for kitchen use and develop a patina with time.

Thank you for supporting a small Devon workshop, every purchase helps me keep doing what I love: making useful, beautiful wooden objects by hand that can be enjoyed for years to come.

If you have questions about a product, want care advice, or would like a bespoke commission, get in touch and I’ll be happy to help.

I love the tactile feel of wood!

I received my first woodwork tool set on my 7th Birthday, and I still use some of these cherished tools today.

After a career designing and engineering car seats for the world’s leading brands I relocated back “home” to Devon. My time is now spent being creative with wood.

Grafton James Designs is named with some recognition to a relative many generations ago. Grafton Partridge was a hugely successful businessman supplying Candles to most of the Birmingham region from his workshop. That was until someone invented the Lightbulb! Mysteriously his factory burnt down soon after! However, his Christian name has been used by many of his family ancestors, but thankfully my parents decided to call me Jim!

What motivates me?

Working for over 35 years making products for new cars in the demanding automotive industry has given me a true need for attention to detail.

When I create an item in wood I look to use the beauty of its natural characteristics. There needs to be strong aesthetics and function with a level of quality that exceeds the customers expectations.

I also get huge pleasure from restoring old items of furniture and re-purposing antique boxes, cleaning and polishing wood to bring it back to life and give it years more usage is very rewarding.
